Megan Thee Sacrificial Lamb: Rich, Famous & Unprotected

Everyone who knows me knows how much I love Megan Thee Stallion.

A couple years back, I even changed my screen name on Facebook to Regina Thee Mindfulnista to not only brand myself, but to also celebrate what Megan stands for.

In my mind, Megan’s my tall AF little sister—someone I fiercely respect, adore, and look up to (you see what I did there).

But seriously, I recently watched her Amazon Prime documentary, Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words. Seeing her go through so much at such a young age was heartbreaking, but also uncomfortably familiar – and quite frankly triggering.

Like Megan, I too faced several traumatic experiences at a young age, and I bet you probably did too. Her story isn’t unique; it’s as old as time, repeated across generations.

As a young Black girl, I endured the gaze of unwanted attention (e.g. being called “thick” by grown ass men when I was only 14). I felt the stinging sensation of betrayal when I was victimized and needed protection (e.g. being physically abused by an intimate partner, but being labeled the problem).

AND…when I tried to protect myself from that domestic violence situation, people told me that I was the reason why Black men avoid Black women, and that I was leading to the downfall of another Black man.

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

And what I mean by people, I mean my friends, and a so-called best friend at that.

While I was watching the documentary, I was thinking to myself: if someone like Megan—rich, famous, and powerful—can still find herself unprotected, then WTF about us regular, degular Black women?

We see it time and time again: we are often left to fend for ourselves.

So you know what sis, it’s time to focus on self-preservation.
